Through twilight darkness and morning My scarlet tears will run As stolen blood And whispered loved Of fantasies undone. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The shimmering maiden – yes, shimmering – waltzed into this suspicious looking ‘Land’. What treason did it hold, what lies, what treachery?
Perhaps she should slow down a bit.
Ever since the first blinks of her eyelids had commenced, staring curiously out into this cursed world as innocently as could be, she had always held a fearful manner toward everyone and everything. Why? Maybe it was instinctive, or her mother might have learned while pregnant and passed the genes or traits or whatever the little buggers were down to Darling. She didn’t know and didn’t care, really; it paid off in the end. After all, better safe than sorry.
So here she was, studying her whereabouts with sunken spectacles, observing every twig that twitched and every cloud that drifted overhead. Each sudden movement, such as the flitting of that robin over there’s wings, caused her ears to spasm involuntarily. They twitched and yanked and twirled this way and that, until finally she told herself to quit being so paranoid and just enter the place already.
Her hide, as I’ve said before, seemed to glisten from every angle. Like her habitual fear of unfamiliar items, she had a natural glow to her jacket, which radiated even more fiercely when she grew scared or angry. It was quite strange, really.
But let’s not get off-topic, shall we?
Darling dared to put one slender hoof before her, softly creasing the shoots beneath her without intention. When nothing leapt out to seize her or bloody her up a bit before departing once more into the shadows, she placed another talon forward, then another. Slowly but surely she made progress, like when she was a young foal beginning to walk, and finally reached a good-sized boulder. This served as her first landmark. Yes, this was where she’d stay until some horrible creature happened upon her to claim her timid self to his kingdom as another pawn on his mighty chessboard. She was only a trophy that shimmered.
Folding her limbs, she neatly tucked her ankles beneath her light bulk and laid down her tiara on the comforting verdure, hoping that she’d be left alone but knowing the odds were highly unlikely, hoping that sleep would overcome her so that she could escape this perilous thing called life.
